چکیده

The aim of this paper is to look at the evolution of massive stars in order to determine whether or not the progenitor of V838 Mon may be a massive star. In the first part of this paper, the evolution of massive stars around solar metallicity is described, especially the evolution in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Then, using the observational constraints, the probable progenitors (and their evolution) are described. Using models of single stars, no progenitor can be found amongst massive stars that can satisfy all the observational constraints. Wolf-Rayet stars (stars with initial masses above about 30 M⊙, which have lost their hydrogen rich envelopes) could explain 10 to 100 M⊙ of circumstellar material but they are very luminous (L & 10 L⊙). Main sequence stars crossing the HR diagram and becoming red supergiants (RSG) can have very low effective temperatures but take thousands of years to cross over. Be stars (fast rotating stars with a mass around 10 M⊙), which form disk or B stars accreting matter from a binary companion of a similar mass would need to be compared in detail with the observational constraints. In the future, there will hopefully be further observational constraints on the models coming from the mass and nature (interstellar or circumstellar) of the material producing the light echo and from a frequency estimate of spectacular objects such as V838 Mon.

Near-infrared Water Lines in V838 Monocerotis

V838 Monocerotis had an intriguing, nova-like outburst in 2002 January that has subsequently led to several studies of the object. It is now recognized that the outburst of V838 Mon and its evolution are different from those of a classical nova or other classes of well-known eruptive variables. V838 Mon, along with two other objects that have analogous properties, appears to make up a new class...

The Continued Optical to Mid-ir Evolution of V838 Monocerotis

The eruptive variable V838 Monocerotis gained notoriety in 2002 when it brightened nine magnitudes in a series of three outbursts and then rapidly evolved into an extremely cool supergiant. We present optical, near-IR, and mid-IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of V838 Monocerotis obtained between 2008 and 2012 at the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m, NASA IRTF 3m, and Gemini South 8m t...

Spitzer Observations of V838 Monocerotis: Detection of a Rare Infrared Light Echo

We present Spitzer observations of the unusual variable V838 Monocerotis. Extended emission is detected around the object at 24, 70 and 160 μm. The extended infrared emission is strongly correlated spatially with the HST optical light echo images taken at a similar epoch. We attribute this diffuse nebulosity to be from an infrared light echo caused by reprocessed thermal emission from dust heat...

A new model for V838 Monocerotis: a born-again object including an episode of accretion

We present new stellar evolution models that show that the born-again phenomenon, also known as a very late thermal pulse, is a viable explanation for the behaviour of V838 Monocerotis if a period of accretion is included. Based on this model, we assert that V838 Mon is a variation of a born-again giant in close orbit with a main-sequence binary companion of mass greater than 0.7 M .
